Last night was the premier of The Tonight Show with Conan Obrien. Now , before I jump into my review, I will admit I have been a fan of the show for a long time. I used to watch the show when it was Johnny Carson as well as Jay Leno. I am not much of a Conan fan though. I don't find him to be that funny.
Ok, so here is my review of the show:
It started out quite funny as Conan gets the call saying 20 minutes to show time.. but as the camera pans back, you see he is in New York City ( where his old show was filmed ) instead of Los Angeles. He leaves the building to hail a cab with no luck so he " runs " across the country - snipets of him in different cities running along. As he finally reaches his studio, the door is locked. He reaches in his pocket and realizes he forgot his keys back in N.Y.
The show had its moments- but not many. It seemed even his side-kick Andy Richter was laughing to encourage others to do so. Even with the tension and nervousness, Conan could have done a bit better ( Thanking Universal Studios several times in a few minutes seems to be over grateful ). Not once did he even say " Welcome to the Tonight Show "... which I thought was a bit cad.
He is no Johnny or Jay. It may take Conan quite awhile to get up to that level.
I honestly think he should have gotten Jay as his first guest and return the favor ( may be Jay was out of town for it ..who knows?). But having Will Farrell was mediocre at best. The jokes were ok but that's all. No roaring laughter that was for sure!
Will The Tonight Show be a success, and continue its run of over 50 years? Or is NBC going to can the show ? Jay returns on September 14 with a new talk show ... on prime time ! Leno fans can not wait.
As I said before , I have always been a fan of the show since I was a young teenager. Johnny made me laugh. Jay made me laugh. Conan has yet to make me laugh. Granted, I did have some chuckles.. and that's all I have been able to muster. Too bad. I liked The Tonight Show . With Conan, however, things may change.
I honestly think with Jay returning at the 10pm slot followed by NBC Nightly News, people will start going to bed an hour earlier.
Conan may reach the 20 year olds but he also has to cater to the other demographics, failing that market will be the beginning of the end of an era lasting over 50 years. And those are big shoes to fill. His style of comedy is different, and that's something late night viewers will have to get used to.

OK. I have never seen this stupid move ...ever ! The other day while driving on the Anthony Henday, I gave my brakes a test beyond any imagination. A car / SUV was AT A FULL STOP in the lane to let some other cars merge onto the highway. As I was approaching , another car swerved and clipped the stopped car.. and I mean it just clipped it. I heard a clink sound and thought I was hit as well. We pulled over and got out to check for damage. None for me. I could not believe my ears when the driver stated she stopped to let the others in. MORON !!! YOU NEVER STOP ON THE HIGHWAY TO LET OTHERS IN !!! PERIOD !

My heart goes out to the families of the passengers on AirFrance Flight 447 which crashed in the Atlantic ocean between Brazil and Senegal. The ill-fated flight ran into major turbulence at 35000 feet and may have been struck by lightning, causing a major electrical failure ( an automated message was relayed to air traffic stating so ). It may have also cause cabin de-pressurization. All 228 on board are dead.
The A-330 was not even 4 hours into the 11 hour flight when it's last contact with air traffic controllers was just off the coast of Brazil. As it heads over the Atlantic, there is no radar contact until it reaches the coast of Africa.. nearest being Senegal.
Now from what I have read and what I understand of this may be a bit far fetched.. but here goes. The Airbus as well as newer aircrafts are all built with the latest technology in weather radar and navigational systems. Aircrafts are all tested to withstand lightning and have static rods placed on the wings.
Whatever happened on this flight happened so fast that the flight crew had absolutely no time to send out a MAYDAY . The only thing I can see is that it was Explosive decompression.
It is rather unprecedented that an aircraft at 35000 can be taken down by lightning alone. If there was cabin depressurization, the plane would have to make a rapid decent to 10,000 feet in order to breathe.
No one will know for sure what exactly happened until the Black boxes are found and retrieved. Then will we know. And that also will be a taunting task as it may be on the ocean floor some 13,000 meters below the surface.
So my condolences to each of the families. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
